How to tell if the dog is sick

By Jerry Welsh

A dog owner will certainly be concerned if the pet gets sick because dogs are considered as members of the family. You may be providing the dog with a healthy diet, have ensured that the dog is taken to the vet for its inoculations and regular checkups but the pet would still get sick. Pet owners know that a sick pet must have immediate medical attention but knowing the health condition of the pet can be difficult due to the fact that dogs cannot verbalize what they feel. As immediate medical assistance would be important for the speedy and complete recovery of the pet, an owner has to be very observant to see the telltale signs.

A change in activity level can be symptom of an illness. Dog owners accustomed to exuberance of the pet would be concerned and think that something is wrong with the pet if it has suddenly become lethargic and withdrawn. Of course the change in behavior can be seen in dogs advanced in age. But if the decreased activity level is accompanied by loss of balance, limping and movement difficulties, something is certainly wrong with the pet.

The eating and drinking habits of a sick dog will definitely change. Any dog owner would say that his/her pet is a good eater. Our four legged furry friends even eat non-edible objects so that it would be surprising if the pet would turn away from a doggie bowl filled with its food. A sick dog will be noticed to drink more water. The dog's tendency to drink more water can be associated with an underlying health concern like diabetes. On the other hand, hot weather or increased activity would make a dog drink more water.

Most dog owners would not worry if the pet throws up or have diarrhea as these animals are indiscriminate eaters. But if the dog had been vomiting for more than a day and the diarrhea that has lasted for several days already contains mucous or blood, the dog must have medical assistance at once. To learn about the dog's health, it is customary for dog owners to check the nose of the pet. A dog's cold and wet nose is sign of good health. Dogs that are feeling under the weather are noted to have dry warm and runny noses.

A pet owner has to be aware of these symptoms so that the pet can be taken to a vet right away. Prompt medical assistance would save the life of the pet and also spare the owner from a spending large amounts on medications and vet's PF if the condition worsens.
