Why are dogs crying at night

By Jerry Welsh

Because dogs are lively and high spirited animals they are the most popular choice for a pet. Dogs' effervescent nature is shown by the grinning face and the happily wagging tail. Animal lovers can have any kind of animal for a pet but very few can have the affectionate and the happy personality of dogs. Dogs make wonderful pets because of the loads of fun they give the family but these pets are not without faults.

Dogs are considered as pseudo people not only because they are well loved pets but also because these animals do have some "people-like" qualities. Puppies are well loved because these irresistible bundles of fur would entertain the family the whole day - but this situation can change when nighttime comes. It would be very hard to resist adorable puppies but mind you, these cuddly little ones can keep you up all night. Puppies can be cry babies that would disturb the master's sleep but older dogs are known to whine and cry too. Why are dogs crying at night?

Puppies that have just been taken from the breeder would usually cry at night. Because of the novelty of having a new pet, the pup will be constantly surrounded by the family. The puppy that will be left alone when the playmates retire to sleep will start to feel lonely. The puppy will now realize that the surrounding is unfamiliar and that the mother and the litter mates are nowhere to be found. Alone, the puppy that is frightened of the unfamiliar dark place will cry and cry in an effort to get the master to come.

Crying at night is not manifested by puppies alone. The reason for crying though would be different from what makes puppies cry at night. Dog owners have to provide the pet with opportunities to interact with people and with other dogs as they are social animals. In spite of being energetic animals, dogs love to sleep too and if given a chance, the pet will sleep the day away.

You will be very lucky if the pet that is left alone all day would sleep instead of being destructive by chewing belongings or by digging tunnels in the garden. Your pet that has been sleeping the whole day would be very much "alive" at night and would expect to play and bond with the family. Of course the dog is not aware of your need to sleep. The dog that is once again alone will cry. Crying at night can be the dog's way of calling your attention because it wants to go potty. The crying dog may have an undiagnosed health concern. Although going to the dog every time it cries is not recommended as it will reinforce this unwanted habit, an owner must also verify if the crying dog is sick.
