Advantage of owning a Shih Tzu

By Frankie Winchester

Not everyone is interested in getting a Beagle or a Labrador or even a Puggle as a pet. In fact there are some people who like to own Chihuahuas, Terriers, Huskies, Poodles and the cute and lovely Shih Tzus'. The dog breed mentioned at the last may not be the one that is suited to everyone but it cannot be denied that there are several people who are more than interested in being future Shih Tzu owners.

Of course not everyone looking for a puppy starts off with a Shih Tzu puppy in mind, but when fate crosses this adorable puppy across their paths, it seems to be more than they can do to resist the inquisitive faces, the short upturned nose with the hair fanning out in all directions and the gentle adoring eyes staring at them with patent mischief.

A Shih Tzu puppy will make an ideal apartment pet as it doesn't mind being indoors and in fact, can be quite active when indoors as well. Shih Tzu's can also be quite indolent if they are allowed to be and more often than not you will find it lying around in various comfortable spots around your house.

This is why you shouldn't over feed your Shih Tzu puppy, as it can become fat and lazy. Keep your puppy well fed and remember to exercise it regularly. If you live in an apartment, try and take him out for regular daily walks. Don't overtire it however and go for very long distances, as the Shih Tzu breed is a small breed and only needs moderate amounts of exercise.

You may think about letting your Shih Tzu puppy play and run around in your yard, if you do have a yard. A daily walk is a good option, but in this case your Shih Tzu puppy is having all the exercise it needs throughout the day in small bouts.

A great thing about Shih Tzu dogs is that they make great watch dogs or guard dogs; they are easily aroused by something that is not ordinary and tend to bark at that thing or person. However they do not keep barking all the time, which is one of the reasons why a Shih Tzu is a good apartment dog.

It would be very nice to know that Shih Tzu dogs are nice and gentle with older children, except in certain conventional cases which can make them snappish like an old fashioned tail pulling and might not be the best kind of dogs in front of very young or mischievous children.

A Shih Tzu puppy is also an ideal option for the dog lover who is allergic to dogs, or rather dog hair. Shih Tzu's shed almost none to very little fur which makes them a great candidate for allergy sufferers.

You might be surprised to know but Shih Tzus' make very good show dogs. A little bit of grooming can make your very own Shih Tzu a champion show dog.
