Advice For Keeping Your Dog Healthy and Active

By Megan Cattermole

One of the best ways of keeping your dog healthy and in good shape is by giving him the right food to eat. This is one of the keys to your dog's good health. As a dog owner for more than thirty years I have found that a lot of the dog food available in large pet shops is not very high in nutritional value and therefore not very adequate for a good dog's diet.

How many people would be able to exist on eating the exact same food every day. Yet this is what most dog owners expect their dog to do. They give their dog the same food every day and never give it another thought. It must be a very boring diet for their dog and what makes matters worse is that the food is often rubbish too.

Keeping your dog inoculated will also help to keep him healthy, puppies are normally inoculated within weeks of birth and then in most cases a booster is required annually. Other medication vital to your dogs health include worming tablets, heartworm tablets and other medication, all of which your local vet will advise you of.

It is important to find a good local vet for your dog in case of emergency treatment. Your vet will be able to treat your dog and prescribe medication as well as advising on preventative healthcare.

Finding a vet that is kind and understanding is essential if your dog is of a nervous disposition. Try and get your dog used to vising the vets at times when he doesn't need any treatment as this will help him to feel more reassured that bad things are not always going to happen at the vets.

Keeping your dog healthy will help him to live a long active life and it will also help to keep the vet bills to a minimum too.
