Choosing the Right Breed of Chicken for Backyard Rearing

Chickens are very popular these days as many people are raising them at their own backyards. There are some of the things that are to be discussed when you do decide on raising poultry. First thing to consider is your commitment to taking care of these animals; are you ready to commit few hours each day for these creatures? Second thing is that your yard must be suitable for breeding and raising chickens; proper environment is important for growth and development. Another consideration is that you should be able to study and know your neighborhood's rules regarding raising livestock within the community. You must be prepared for future occurrences such as vacations or when illness strikes.

Some venture into raising poultry for the purpose of meat and egg consumption. They can raise the Rhode Island for its multipurpose. If its eggs that you focus on producing, the Minorca breed is popular for laying good quality eggs. As for meat consumption, selling or personal utilization, the big Jersey Giant is a good choice. There are hens that lay colorful eggs, such as the Auracauna breed which lays blue and green eggs. But there are also hens that normally lay white to brown eggs.

Never disregard the climate of your area when you do choose the right breed for your pet birds. For the northern area, Silver Laced Wyndottes and Buff Orphington breeds are good choices. Bigger birds with thick feathers are better off with cold weathers. If you do pick the right breed, you are sure to have good number of eggs all year round.

You must see to it that if you opt for birds with thick feathers, they must be groomed once in a while to keep them clean. These type of breed is not suited for free ranged area because if not cared for, they can be untidy looking.

It is advised that you seek information from The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) regarding the history, status and availability of bird breeds. With their help, you'll have an idea what type needs more breeders to make sure they don't vanish.
