Dog Training Advice And Ways To Assist An Animal Walk On The Leash

By Victor Joseph

When a pet owner purchases a new puppy or dog, they may wonder how to teach them to walk on a leash. There are various ways that an owner can get their canine to walk better for them. Dog training advice that works may have a person looking at their own methods and adding some new ideas to their system.

The leash will need to meet the needs of the pet and owner. A large breed dog and their size will have to be taken into consideration when choosing the thickness and support of the strap. A small dog may not need a large lead and may be able to handle a short and thin one. A long and extending model may be good for some breeds but not for others. Learning what makes a good lead could be helpful in the process of effective walking.

The owner should always be the one to lead out of the home with the dog. If a dog is pulling to get out of the home and pushes past the owner, it tells them that they are in control of the upcoming walk. Ensuring that the owner is in front when they step outside will let the puppy know who is the boss.

Small broken treats can be tossed into an open mouth of a pet during a walk. These broken pieces should be small because the owner will be handing them out often at first. Each time the canine does something great such as walking without pulling for two seconds, they will get rewarded. Eventually the treats will phase out and the behavior will continue.

Allowing the dog to only walk beside the owner is a great way to gain control. The process of this may take awhile and could require lots of treats and work but it will happen for the puppy. When a canine learns that effective walking means that there will be no more of a struggle between owner and pet, it will make the event more enjoyable.

While dogs should have the chance to run free and get some exercise, during an actual walk there should be some discipline and control. A pulling or tugging pet is not fun to walk and could make it challenging for the owner to manage.

Using the best dog training advice will help someone master the art of outdoor strolls. When a puppy has the skills needed to stay beside their people owner, then they will have a happy time with their outings. When a dog is trained, it can make the process easier for both the owner and the canine.
