How To Choose A Good Local Vet For Your Pet

By Suzie Peterson

If you are looking for a good local vet for your pet then one of the ways is to visit the local surgery and talk to the staff. Have a look at how the surgery operates to see how smoothly things run. Ask around in your neighbourhood to see if you can get any good local vet recommendations. Look through the Yellow pages ads but bear in mind that large ads do not necessarily mean that the service is good.

If you are new to the area and have recently moved, you could also contact a local boarding kennels or cattery to see if they could recommend a local vet. It is important to try and find a local vet in your area as if there is an emergency and you need to get your pet to the vets urgently you would not want to have to travel a long way and encounter heavy traffic or any delays.

You will want to find a local vet that has a good reputation with good communication and personal skills as well as being competent in medical and surgery skills. Finding a vet that is patient with nervous pets who are difficult to handle is also important and one that is good with nervous and worried pet owners too.

Take into account the atmosphere of the surgery and try to get a feel for how the surgery operates. You could try talking to the vet and the staff and see how they treat the animals and their owners. If there is a relaxed and calm atmosphere then this will be good for your pet, especially if they are nervous and don't handle visits to the vets very well.

One final point to bear in mind when looking for a good local vet for your pet is the hygiene standards of the surgery. If the surgery is kept as clean and odour free as possible at all times, then this will give you a good indication that they have high standards and provide a good quality of service for their clients.
