Taking Care Of Ragdoll Cats

By Chelsea Martin

Ragdoll cats have one of the plumpest sizes of any house cat breed. They usually weigh anywhere from eight to thirteen pounds, based on their gender, when they are fully developed. Blue is always the color of their eyes, though the exact shade may vary.

The breed is, technically, longhaired, but they don't possess an undercoat. Many an owner think of this as an advantage since there is usually less shedding of fur. Their fur is so soft that it's sometimes compared to a rabbit's fur. Their furriest parts tend to be their necks and tails. It is recommended that they be brushed quite often. They won't mind, because they usually enjoy themselves during a grooming.

This type of cat has been both solid colored or many colors together at once. Their coats can be one of four different colors. These are blue, lilac, seal and chocolate. Blue and lilac are both grayish coat colors with hints of blue. Seal is a softer brown color and chocolate is a dark brown. These colors do not appear right away because, like Siamese kittens, these are born with all white bodies.

An American woman first bred this type of cat in California in the 1960's. She bred a male Siamese cat with a female longhaired Angora cat. Together, their DNA created this type of cat. In the 1990's, quite a few years later, a new breed was created from this breed called the Ragamuffin. The two breeds share some of the same qualities.

This breed is very docile and passive. They love to nap and to lay or be held in a pair of loving arms. However, this does not mean that they are at all boring. They love to play with toys and to be around people. They do not use their voices very often but will if they're hungry, or if they're answering the door, as they are known to do.

These kitties tend to respond positively to being given a treat for a job well done. This renders them easy to train to claw a scratching post as opposed to them using their sharp nails on your furniture and clothing. Many owners also have been able to teach them to go on walks while wearing a leash.

Ragdoll cats do not possess the ability to fight back when they are attacked. Because of this, they should be kept as indoor cats only. That isn't to say that they cannot be taken outside. If this is done, then they should be under constant supervision so that they're not harmed.
