Therapy Dog Training Tips - Responsible Pet Ownership

By Mick Moore

I was visiting with a friend today and he was telling me about his neighbor's dog who barks frantically from early in the morning until his people return late in the day. This occurs daily except on the weekends. My friend's concern was more for the well being of the dog than for the noise pollution that had descended on his quiet neighborhood.

Apparently, the neighbors refuse to accept that their dog is upset when the family is away. My friend had tried to talk to them but there was so much defensiveness that it was a wasted effort. It seems the dog was a rescue and had been badly abused and his new family was extremely protective.

I have noticed this attitude before. I think the dog will adjust when he realizes the people do return every day. The whole situation is new for the dog and, based on his history, just a bit traumatic. My friend is very understanding of the circumstances, nevertheless, being told 'if you don't like it you can move' didn't really go over very well.

I don't would like to get into a judgment or condemnation of town squabbles; I do want to propose a very simple remedy that can work to everyone's benefit. You can find sonic systems that, for the most part, release a high pitched sound that's above a individuals hearing range. But your pet dog can hear it and definitely will normally stop barking. It is a small unit which can be constructed in your property and can build up to sixty ft away. Once the dog barks, the sonic audio is produced and is irritating to the dog. It does not cause harm to your canine.

With that said, I will tell you another story about a different friend. She was the one with the barking dogs. Her neighbor put up the bark discouraging device in his yard and every time my friend's dog barked the device emitted a high pitched sound. Pretty soon, her dog wouldn't even go outside!

This is a possibility and the poor dog suffered because of it.

Of course, a good thing to do is have an grownup, relaxed conversation with any one that's disturbing the area. For many peculiar reason, it doesn't always work that someone who is usually very much within control of his feelings can't work through the idea that somebody despises his / her dog and continues the defensive. We have discovered these types of people are much more realistic about their children.

Exciting, isn't it? My pet dogs? They each wear a Tri-tronics Bark Diminisher.
