A Glance At How To Care For A Kitten

By Robert Baker

One of the most exciting events for any person or family is bringing home a new kitten. Not only are they remarkably cute, but they can grow up to become a great pet and companion. I said "can" become because it is important to know the details on how to care for a kitten. With that in mind, let's discuss some of the things you can do to help ensure your kitty grows up to be a healthy and happy cat.

The best time to bring home your new friend is about 8 weeks old. This is the time when most kittens are weaned off the mother's milk and eating solid food. If you bring a kitty home to early, you could be faced with special care issues.

Water, not cow's milk, is best for your cat. Cow's milk may induce diarrhea and other stomach ailments. So keep a steady supply of fresh water on hand at all times.

Just as you would not give your baby a T-bone steak, you won't want to give your kitty adult cat food. You can feed her dry or wet cat food or some combination of both. You will just want to be sure that the food is formulated for kittens.

As mentioned earlier, it is not good to bring him home too early. In addition to health reasons, it is also during that 8 week time that kittens will learn from their mothers to use a litter box. When they come home with you, they will already know how to do so. And speaking of kitty litter, non clumping litter is best for the young ones. Kittens may swallow clumped pieces while they groom themselves.

Lastly, be sure to give him a full vet check up. You have to make sure that he is de-wormed and that tests for FIV and Feline Leukemia have been conducted.
