Three Most Common Dog Allergies

By Zyana Sheen

An allergy will make your dog lose his appetite and joy of life. He doesn't want to play anymore, he's not eager to eat his food anymore and he loses his interest in life. And above all this, he might be vomiting early in the morning or endlessly scratching and biting his skin. The problem in this case might be an allergy. The most common dog allergies are to food, fleas and environment (atopy or inhalant allergy).

Food allergies can develop over a long period of time, including several years, to a wide range of ingredients. Some of the most common allergens are the beef, dairy, corn, soy, chicken and raw fish. When a dog is suffering from food allergy he is scratching excessively, losing hair, presenting skin irritation, vomiting and pooping more than usual. The most common treatment for this kind of allergy is to change your dog's diet with a food he hasn't tried before. There are several hypoallergenic products on the market like venison and potatoes, lamb and rice etc. However, before doing this, it's better to check with your veterinarian to make sure your choice is medically approved.

Flea allergies are caused by fleas that suck the blood of the dog just like mosquitoes do. Dogs are allergic to the fleas' saliva which irritates their skin. The symptoms are similar to those caused by a food allergy, including redness, itchy spots and extreme scratching and chewing. The first thing you can do if you suspect your dog of having a flea allergy is to give him a bath and shampoo him with a special, anti-flea solution. If the situation is more serious than that, you should consult your veterinarian.

Atopy or inhalant allergies are caused by specific items that are part of the environment. The allergens can be house dust, chemicals, mites, molds, pollens and even grass. A dog suffering from atopy might have skin infections, hair losses and red, chewy spots. Avoidance of exposure is the best treatment and a quick and easy way to solve the skin problems includes omega-3 fatty acids, steroids, immunotherapy and special creams.

As a conclusion, you should remember that protection is recommended in order to keep your dog less exposed to allergens of any type. Be sure to avoid feeding him cheap and totally unhealthy food, don't let him eat garbage or food from someone else, keep the dangerous items in a special room and don't allow your dog to go in there.
