Natural Pet Products Are Replacing Mass Produced Products for Cats and Dogs

By Stephen Daniels

It seems that recently, increasing numbers of people have become concerned, even obsessive about eating fresh, local foods and using body care products that are not adulterated with harmful chemicals, hormones or other additives. We are also requiring the same level of care for our companion animals. Learning about wholesome pet foods and other natural pet products for your family pet is an important part of being a responsible pet owner.

Most of us consider our domestic pets members of the family. As we become more accustomed to not feeding our children processed foods that contain more chemicals than real nutrients, or using cleaning products filled with harmful toxins, we have also come to realize that our pets' food, treats, flea control, dental care and cat litter deserve the same scrutiny. After all, not only is the health of our dogs and cats at risk, but when we treat fleas and other insects with neurotoxins or use kitty litter composed entirely of blue "crystals," we are adding those chemicals to our own surroundings - and to that of the planet.

Healthy pet products include herbs for both cats and dogs - sometimes all in the same items. One natural flea spray, for instance, includes lemongrass, citronella, neem oil, even catnip. The citrusy scent of this and other natural remedies for dogs and cats is pleasing for us, but a definite turn-off for fleas.

Other organic herbs for pets can probably be found in your own kitchen -- garlic and brewer's yeast. Garlic not only repels vampires, but has also been utilized for centuries as a natural antibiotic. It is also thought to fight parasites, help with digestion, respiration and cardiovascular functioning. So, add some garlic to your spaghetti sauce, but also share the good stuff with Fido.

Brewer's Yeast is rich in amino acids, critical components for building proteins, and B-complex vitamins, for healthy skin and nerves.

The elephant in the room is the pet food industry. Most of the "meat" in commercially made pet food might actually be cow heads, tongues, intestines and other unappetizing byproducts. With some manufacturers, "meat" has been found to include "meat" from infected animals, as well as toenails, etc. Furthermore, when feedlot cattle are fed antibiotics to fight disease and hormones to promote rapid growth, those additives are ultimately fed to your dog or cat. The class or physical condition of animals destined for canned pet food is designated by the 4D system: disabled, diseased, dying or dead.

Historically, long before dogs and cats became pets, and of course, their cousins still in the wild, feed on real meat. Unless a creature is starving, it would be a rare cat or dog in the wild that would consume toenails or other tainted by-products that could cause them to become sick. Before 1930, pets ate leftovers from their owners' meals. Today you may not want to invite your dog or cat to the table, but there are many organic and all natural healthy food options for your furry family member, some as close as your refrigerator!
