Betta Fish Feeding Instruction

By Jason Andrews

The proper food for your Betta fish is vital in ensuring they live a long time. Crustaceans, bloodworms, flies, and grasshoppers are all types of food your Betta fish will eat in their natural habitat. Attempt to provide more than one of the choices in this article. It's much healthier for your Betta fish to get a little variety in his diet. Even if you prefer to only provide store bought foods, attempt to change it up from time to time.

Feeding Betta fish - Quantity of Food When feeding Betta fish, be certain not to feed them too much. Adult Betta fish should eat no more than once a day, while babies need to be fed two times a day. A wise rule while dispensing food to Betta fish is to drop in no more food than they can consume within two minutes. If there is still food remaining after 2-3 minutes, it is likely that it will sink and could at one point create bacteria that could harm your Betta fish.

It's also healthy to forgo feeding your Betta once per week (consistently on the same day). This allows the fish's digestion a chance to recover and clean itself out. It's possible to go away for two days without feeding your Betta fish, but any longer than 2 day and you should either have someone give him food or use an automatic feeder.

Betta Feeding Instructions - Commercial food The safe and easy method is to purchase Betta fish food pellets from your nearby pet shop. These basically come with mashed up vitamins, mosquito larvae, shrimp, fish meal, and an assortment of other stuff. Frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp are also terrific, safe and simple options (although your Betta fish prefers live food). Frozen insects don't contain any bacteria or parasites that may hurt your Betta, so will generally be safer than live food.

Feeding Bettas - Live Food Another option is to feed your Betta live insects, for example, black mosquito larvae (known as bloodworms) or living brown worms. While Betta fish prefer live insects, they can come with disease and illness and must be washed thoroughly. You should never give your Betta fish worms caught locally, since the pesticides they may have been near could be extremely toxic. If you decide to acquire live food, then be cautious with the quantity while feeding Bettas. While they will allow frozen food sink to the bottom of the tank, a Betta fish will never stop consuming live food and could literally eat himself to death!

Betta fish Feeding Instructions - Unusual Situations If you are thinking of mating two Betta's, you need to give them richer foods like Grindal or blackworms, fruit flies, brine shrimp, etc.. Be certain to take a look at the Betta mating guide to learn more about their dietary needs and additional information on Betta fish reproduction. You can feed an adult Betta as many as times per day if you're expecting to mating them. Newborn Betta fish should eat approximately five days after they're born. Foods that can be broken into tiny pieces, for instance, boiled egg yolk, baby brine shrimp, and infusoria can be fed to the Betta fries multiple times a day.
