The Blue Mitted Ragdoll Cat Makes A Wonderful Pet

By Estela Roy

The ragdoll is a beautiful and special breed of cat. There are many different types within this breed, one of them is called blue mitted ragdoll. This breed has a unique history and there are several specific details to each variety.

This breed was created in the 1960s in California by breeder Ann Baker. She started with a white female with long hair and Siamese markings and mated it with similar looking males. From the first litter, she picked the kittens with the look she wanted and continued breeding until she generated the standard type for the ragdoll. When picked up and held, these cats lay limp and relax, like a child's doll, and that's how they got their name.

This breed is generally described as large and pointed, meaning they have a darker color on their ears, tail, and legs, and a mask with a lighter shade. All of these cats have azure eyes. Males average anywhere from fourteen to eighteen pounds, although some altered males can reach twenty pounds or more. Females usually average only nine to thirteen pounds. They are a very slowly maturing stock. Kittens are born pure white and it can take up to two weeks before any color or pattern can be discerned. Also, it may take up to three to four years before the cat has reached full color and weight.

The coat is medium to long in length and is extremely soft and silky. It is low shedding and non-matting, but a regular brushing maintenance of the coat is required. They have a very easy going and relaxed temperament. They enjoy using a scratch post, but they rarely use their claws for self defense. They are very trusting and loyal, well-behaved, and great with children and other pets.

The colors of fur are blue, cream, seal, chocolate, lilac, and red. Particular mixing of colors results in colors as tobie, lynx, or torte. The patterns are bicolor, mitted, and colorpoint. Any color and pattern can be combined to achieve a desired look when bred.

One very specific type is the blue mitted. Now, blue is the name for the slate gray color of fur. Since it is a pointed cat, the ears, tail, and legs will have a dark slate gray color. The mask will be a lighter variation of the slate gray and the same lighter shade will appear throughout the coat. It will have matching white mittens on the front feet and white boots, about mid-thigh, on the back legs. It will also have a white chin and chest, as well as a white strip running down the belly.

Just like all the other variations of the breed, the blue mitted ragdoll is a gentle, loving, docile cat. Although rather large, they make a beautiful and wonderful addition to the family.
