Looking For Horse Agistment?

By Michelle Rudge

The first place to begin looking for horse agistment services is on the internet. On the internet you will find many horse directories (which will include a section on horse agistment) or be totally dedicated to horse agistment. Many properties are now setting up their own websites so you will be able to have a look at the services they provide and possibly their rates too. If you don't have access to the internet then I recommend checking out your local business and telephone directory. Another great place to look is in the classified ads of your local newspaper or your favorite horse magazine.

Ideally it would be best if you can have your horse housed either near your home or work/school. But if that's not possible, then you will need to consider how far you are prepared to travel and then how you are going to get there. If you aren't able to drive there yourself, will you need to catch public transport and is it regular enough for the amount of time you will be there. You will need to visit your horse regularly so it should be relatively easy to get there.

Next you will need to decide what services you are willing to provide yourself, and what you would like the agistment provider to do for you. While deciding this, you will be need to consider how much time you will have to look after your horse yourself and if you don't have much time, how much are you prepared to pay to for these services. If you have plenty of time you may be able to do most of the care yourself and just have outdoor grazing and shelter available. But if your time is limited you will need to consider the costs of having everything done for you.

Now that you have figured out your requirement, what is available and what will fit in to your budget, it's time to choose two or three properties and organize a time to visit and inspect the properties. I advise seeing more than one property so that you can compare them against each other. You will be looking for at the care of the grounds, other horses and that the facilities provided are as you expected. Also check to see what equipment you will need to provide yourself and the storage facilities for any of your gear. Another thing you will need to check is the hours in which you are able to visit your horse. This will be particularly important if you are taking care of most things yourself.

Once you've decided on a horse agistment provider, the last step you need to do is make sure a contract is signed between yourself and the agistment provider. This contract should state the services that will be provided, payment arrangements and what is to be expected from each party. Although you may never have to refer to the contract again, it is important to stop any future problems arising.
