What are the Symptoms of an Aging Dog?

By David Cheng

Like humans, Dogs develop various medical conditions when they age. Common health problems of aging dogs include arthritis, vision and hearing loss, gum diseases and urinary incontinence. Another common problem among aging dogs is obesity. The reason behind the said problem is the decrease in the dog's metabolism.

Urinary incontinence, decrease in heart function, and lower immunity are also apparent in the older dog. Some of the more daunting ailments can include rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammation of the kidney called nephritis, prostate disease which is found more so in dogs that are in tact, diabetes, heart, and liver disease. A dog may incur any of these ailments at an age range as early as 7.5 and even up to 12 years old with life expectancy and breeding being the determining factors.

Being a responsible pet owner, we should take measures on how we could help our pets deal with their problems and to ease them from any sufferings. One good approach in dealing with the problem is to modify your pet's diet and employ proper grooming measures by getting rid of fleas and ticks. Due to lower hormone levels, incontinence may arise but you do not need to worry too much because it can be dealt with appropriate medication therapy.

Diet change is also beneficial in preventing kidney problems from arising. To address prostate problems a prescribed antibiotic medication could be given to your dog. It is also very important to provide your dog with a clean place free from drafts that could trigger arthritis attacks. To address gums and teeth problems, oral hygiene and dental maintenance should be employed regularly.

A responsible pet owner should know how to take good care and manage the health problems of their aging dogs. A proactive approach should be employed in addressing the different health concerns of your beloved pet. Because we chose to own a pet, you have to be responsible enough especially when your pet needs you the most. If symptoms of aging arise, make sure that you are already ready to employ measures and modifications in terms of your pet's diet and medications. However, it is also very crucial not to wait for the symptoms to arise. Employ precautionary measures before hand so as not to worsen the situation because through early prevention, your dog could enjoy his or her lifetime more. And that would be the greatest gift you could ever give him.
