Steps toward Keeping your Pet Safe

By Jim Witt

If you love your pet, you will do whatever it takes to keep them healthy and safe. Beyond regular vet checks and a great diet, there are basic and additional ways to keep them safe and happy.

You need to check the collar of your pet at least one time per month. If it is too big or too small it has potentials of causing significant harm to the animal. Some animals have been ill for months because their collar with nylon webbing is too tight and has restricted their breathing and eating capabilities.

A great material for dog collars or cat collars is nylon webbing. This material is very strong and lasts in elements such as extreme heat or cold or dampness. But, even strong materials have a life cycle and can begin to wear out at different times depending on the use of the product.

How often should you take note of the fit of your canine's collar? About once per month, or more if your pet's weight is fluctuating. Depending on the size of the specific animal, a good test is to check to see if two pinky fingers can fit easily under the collar.

If you notice that the collar is loose or tight and you have to adjust it very often, check the hardware. If collar hardware is malfunctioning it can be a big problem. You need to get a new collar immediately. You can make your own by buying nylon webbing dog collar material and clasps.

If your pet is experiencing health problems, the collar size and adjustments must be made more than once per month. A pet with health problems is prone to many weight gain and loss issues.

You must keep the collar adjusted correctly. You don't want your loved pet to become injured by ingesting parts of their collar or getting stuck on a branch outside because it is too loose.

In addition to vet visits, exercise and a high quality food, you pet need's attention. You can help to keep them safe and content by simply placing your fingers under their collar one time every month. It's simple and can save a life.
