Basic Facts About Labradoodle Puppies For Sale

By Roberta Benton

This beautiful crossbreed is quite new, first introduced in 1989 in Australia. The goal was to develop a hypoallergenic dog suitable to be trained as a guide dog. Labradoodle puppies for sale today have become popular as family dogs, valued for their intelligence, friendliness, and sociability. Most have the best of the Poodle and the Lab with the added advantage of being allergy-friendly.

It took several litters to get one hypoallergenic dog. Today most shed very little making them allergy friendly. Some are truly hypoallergenic, but until the adult coat is in, you can't be sure. If allergies are a concern for your family, consult with an experienced breeder before committing to a purchase.

Although not a registered breed with any kennel clubs, there are several Labradoodle clubs maintaining genealogical registries. There are no official requirements for a breed look or temperament. Australian Labradoodles have been further crossbred with Spaniels and Retrievers to further stabilize the breed temperament. Other lines include the original Lab and Poodle mating, or a Labradoodle may be mated with a Lab or a Poodle. Two Labradoodles mated produce Double Doodles.

There are 3 sizes of Labradoodles, standard, medium, and mini. Standards stand 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50-65 pounds. The medium is 18-21 inches tall weighing 30-45 pounds. The mini is 14-17 inches tall weighing 16-25 pounds. Coat color is solid or parti-color, a primary color with some patches of other shades. There are many colors available, any color that a poodle can be seen in, chocolate, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, chalk, and more.

There are 3 hair types, wool, fleece, and hair. The curlier the coat, the more likely the dog is hypoallergenic. The curly coat is called wool, wavy is called fleece, and the straight coat is called hair. Most Australian Labradoodles are bred with either fleece or wool coats. Labradoodles need regular brushing to keep their coats from matting.

Choose a reputable breeder who has begun the puppy socialization process. Your puppy should have been raised in a home, not a kennel, for best temperament. Expect the breeder to be interviewing you as you are interviewing the breeder. A responsible breeder will want the puppies to go to forever homes with responsible owners.

To determine the temperament of Labradoodle puppies for sale, visit with the parents. Even more important than inborn temperament is early training and socialization. A gentle, easy to train dog will become a monster if allowed to run amok. A timid or a stubborn dog can be a gentle, loving family pet if pack leadership is established early, and the dog is well-socialized by positive exposure to people, pets, and new places.
