Grooming is one of the vital factors necessary for a dog's well being. Different dog breeds have different grooming requirements. Some dogs are considered as high maintenance breeds while other breeds would require the least grooming to keep healthy and to have an impressive appearance. Dogs form a strong attachment with their owners but this does not mean that the pet would not put up a good struggle when groomed. This grooming difficulty can be resolved by introducing the grooming procedure to the pet while it is still a puppy.
Regular brushing, trimming and stripping are the basic routines for grooming the dog's coat. Wiry coated breeds like Dachshunds, Schnauzers and most terriers breeds require a twice a year coat grooming procedure known as stripping. Wiry coated dogs usually have a soft under coat and a harsh guard hair. At the start of the hair's growth, the dog will have a healthy, thick and well pigmented hair. At the end of the hair's life span it will become less healthy so that the follicles will become thinner and less strong.
Stripping is necessary to remove the dead hair root. Trimming the hair at this stage will ruin the coat as the dying root was allowed to remain. This condition will lighten the natural color of the coat and mar its silky appearance. The hair can be trimmed but this procedure will not remove the roots of dying hairs thereby preventing new hair from growing, a condition that will bring discomfort to the pet when the undercoat overtakes the weakened guard hair.
The dog's coat can be stripped by using a stripping knife or a latex finger cot. This coat grooming procedure can be done by hand, by the processes known as rolling or carding. Hand stripping is a tedious and time consuming job. Stripping a small dog would take several hours. The process can be speed up by using a stripping knife as it would enable the groomer to have a good grip on the coat thereby removing more hair with every stroke. Carding is done by scraping the coat to remove dead hair. Stripping can also be done by rolling the dog's skin with one hand and removing dead skin with the other.
Stripping is usually started when dogs are 6 months of age. Before the process is done it would be necessary to brush the coat thoroughly to remove tangles. Although it may appear differently, stripping is a painless procedure thus the owner need not worry that the pet will be hurt.
