Dogs are wonderful! They can be a real bless because they are funny, playful and sweet! They are caring and protective companions, offering us amazing moments! However, having a dog can be quite a responsibility. In order to have a healthy dog, we have to be very careful with the diet we choose for them. Also, we have to pay attention to some feeding basic guidelines that I am about to present in this article.
Hygiene. Try to protect your dog by cleaning his bowl daily. If he is on a homemade or raw diet, try to carefully wash the ingredients before cooking or blending them. If he eats kibble, deposit the bag in sanitary conditions. Avoid spoilt food and never mix old food with new food. Also, you know how dogs are, they tend to grab and eat everything they find on the street. Do not allow him to do this and also, do not allow him to eat from someone else. His food should be provided by you only, since you are his master.
Feeding schedule. Perhaps you are busy and you simply forget you have a dog around. Feeding him whenever you remember it's not good for him or for you either. Having a feeding schedule for your puppy ensures a successful crate training and house training. A dog should have around 2, 3 meals per day, at the same hours. If you have a puppy, you have to be more careful, as he needs more meals because of the growing needs. Puppies should have around 4 meals a day until they are 4 months old. After 6 months, you could feed him 2 times a day. Remember that most dog breeders feed their dogs after they eat, to increase obedience and to discourage aggression.
Water. And not just water, but fresh water. Water is essential to dogs, just like it is to humans. They use it for digestion, for absorbing the nutrients from their food and for regulating their body temperature. A dog can last without food up to 2 weeks but, without water, he can only resist a few days. The amount of water required by each dog depends on multiple factors like the size of the dog, its food and its physical activities. One example is that dogs eating kibble need more water than normally. Please keep in mind that boiling or testing is required for tap water, as it can contain bacteria and chemical agents that could possibly harm your dog.
Apart from these rules, there are also some other guidelines worth considering like paying attention to the labels of the commercial dog food and avoiding low quality products or feeding healthy foods like vegetables, fruits and raw meat.
