Fun Information About Mini Labradoodles

By Kristi Schwartz

Whether yellow, black or chocolate colored, the Labrador retriever has consistently been America's favorite breed of dog for decades. The poodle is also among the most popular. So, it stands to reason that when the two breeds are mixed, the resulting dog would also be beloved. This resulting breed is the new labradoodle and has indeed really made a splash. From this breed has come another breed still. Here we will find out a few things about mini labradoodles.

In order to qualify as minis, a labradoodle's parents should be a Lab and a toy poodle. If the mix is a Lab with a standard or miniature poodle, the name 'labradoodle' typically applies. As you might expect, these are larger than minis.

If you are thinking about getting a mini, you should bear in mind that the breed is quite new so it would be foolhardy to start trying to make any sweeping statements regarding general personality or other characteristics. That being said, we can also remember that both parents are breeds that have long been highly regarded and known for being smart and good with people.

The look of a mini is very distinctive, although inconsistent. Some of them have very soft fur while others may appear more wiry. Additionally, the fur may be straight or it may be wavy or curly. Even with those varying differences, they all do tend to shed less than other dogs.

It is good to be aware of potential health issues associated with the Labradoodle. Both Poodles and Labrador Retrievers are susceptible to hip dysplasia. Therefore it should not be unexpected that the offspring of these two are also prone to hip problems. Two other health issues to keep in mind are eye disorders and Addison's disease.

And now we have some fun facts about labradoodles. Because of their retriever lineage, they absolutely love the water. They will swim, jump and play in water any chance they get. It would not be strange for them to simply want to hang around a pool. Also, if doggy odor turns you off, the good news with this breed is that they tend to suffer from that less.

The mini labradoodle is indeed a unique dog. His origin derives from two of the world's most popular breeds. When you consider this idea, your chances for bringing a home a fantastic new friend are great indeed.
