Supporting Your Dog after a Rear Leg Surgery

By Alma Hnanguie

A dog needs extra care and attention as it recovers from a leg injury, same as any humans do. This special attention, however, doesn't mean extreme pampering with you letting your dog just lay for weeks or months in one corner of the house. You have to encourage your pet to do some gradual exercises so that it will regain back the strength of its legs' muscles and bones. Even a partially paralyzed dog is required to do some gradual exercises if in case the vet sees a chance for rehabilitation. However, being its owner/friend, it is your responsibility to ensure that it has the means to walk even with its rear legs that have undergone surgery.

This obligation should prompt you to buy a dog wheelchair for your pet. This special contraption for handicapped canines cannot be used with dogs that have front leg handicaps though. But this would work well for your pet that is still recovering after going under the knife for injuries in the rear legs. The wheelchair is attached at the dog's rear, the wheels actually substituting for the legs. Since the dog can still move its front legs, it simply drags the contraption wherever it goes without much trouble in mobility.

With such capability, your pet would not suffer the fate of a totally paralyzed dog despite its handicaps. Hence, it can continue to move around and even exercise several parts of its body as it walks around the house or the park, if you do bring him to larger spots for more rehab activities. Your dog can almost perform all the things it usually does without harming the rear end. It would continue to enjoy its life, a far cry from the situation it would be in without a wheelchair.

You should also remember, however, that there are some things that you must prevent your dog from doing while in a dog wheelchair. You should prevent your pet from jumping when the contraption is attached to his rear. If it leaps even a bit it risks itself from getting hurt further due to the wheelchair's weight.

Cleaning the wheelchair regularly is another task you have to accomplish. Since most wheelchairs are easy to clean and maintain, this can't be a tedious thing to do at all. You can quickly disassemble and assemble it.
