Consult Reputable Cavachon Breeders for Healthy Cavachon Puppies

By Chloe Gib

The Cavachon is what is often known as a 'designer breed'. These cute dogs are a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise. Crossing two breeds is a bit of a lottery and reputable Cavachon breeders will be endeavoring to breed the healthiest and best tempered dog they can.

With a hybrid dog, it is possible to get any combination of the traits of either breed. So the more positive attributes the two parent breeds have the more likely you are to get enchanting and healthy puppies. Not all crosses are from purebred to purebred. Breeders often breed multi-generation crosses in an effort to establish or 'fix' a certain attribute.

The aim of crossing any two breeds is to try to incorporate certain characteristics from each parent. In this case, breeders were looking for a hypo-allergenic dog of small size that did not shed. The dog also needed to have an affectionate, stable temperament.

Pups often grow to a height somewhere near that of their parents. Cavachons vary from 9 to 18 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 25 pounds. Females don't usually weigh in excess of 20 pounds. As the breed has become more popular, breeders have produced a toy size.

New prospective owners should ask lots of questions about the health of the parents. Both breeds have some genetic conditions although the hybrid generally seems to be relatively free of problems. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is prone to mitral valve disease. This causes many deaths from congestive heart failure. It is an inheritable disease. The Bichon Frise suffers from several immune system diseases which can also be passed on.

The dog comes in a range of solid, broken and even tri-colors. Peach and white is quite common. Most shed a little. One of the drawbacks is that the coat is quite long and needs regular brushing and bathing. This can take up quite a lot of time.

Most Cavachons have very stable temperaments. They are friendly and cope well with plenty of attention and play from children. They get along with other dogs and pets. They are playful and intelligent. Being small they are a good size and well-behaved if trained and socialized while young. The only drawback might be the need to care for their coat properly. And if you contact reputable Cavachon breeders, you can be assured that their Cavachon puppies will be as free as possible of any genetic problems.
