3 Ways to Limit Your Exposure to Common Household Pesticides

By Cindy Shermen

You would be surprised to find out just how many household items that contain dangerous poisons are in your house right now. In fact, nearly a quarter of the pesticides used in the United States every year are used in home, yard school, or day care settings. If you have children or pets, this could pose a serious risk to their safety, so it's important to know and account for these items (and possibly eliminate them from your house entirely).

Just a few of these common products are:

Cockroach sprays and baits

Insect repellents

Flea and tick sprays, powders, and collars

Products that attack mold and mildew

Bathroom disinfectants

Sanitizers

Lawn and garden products such as weed killers

Even though these products are commonly used, they are poisons and should be handled with care. Avoiding them altogether is the best option, but obviously this isn't always possible. Follow these tips to limit your exposure to these harmful substances:

1. Avoid them

Again, this is the best way to keep yourself safe from harmful chemicals. By law a company can't say that pesticides are harmless so don't believe anyone that tries to tell you they are. Using appropriate pest-prevention strategies is the best way to never even have to use these products to begin with. It's also important to remember that you will visist places that aren't restricted from using harsher pesticides. Golf courses are a good example of somewhere that isn't restricted from using stronger pesticides, so keep this in mind when bringing back dirty clothes and shoes from the course.

2. Purchases non-toxic products

Seek out products that aren't toxic and use those instead of poisonous pesticides. Wondercide.com is great place to get natural ingredient-based products including property pest control products, bug sprays, and pet supplies that are effective against pests. Using non-toxic products will cut down the amount of harmful substances in your house.

3. Pay attention to your food

Most regular produce you purchase in grocery stores was grown using pesticides, so make sure you always wash the food you bring home. Another way to avoid pesticides altogether is to buy from your local farmer's market where you can speak to your local farmers and get an idea of their growing process to make sure you're getting food that has been exposed to little or no pesticides.

By following these simple steps, you can be assured that you're minimizing your exposure to harmful poisons and keeping your family safe.
