What to do if your dog has a cold

Signs of cold like sneezing and sniffling will be noticed in people as soon as the weather turns cold. People with colds will be noticed to have red nose and watery eyes. Hankies and Kleenex will be in great demand as these signs of a cold will be exhibited by a big portion of the populace. Noted to be the most affectionate and loyal pets, dogs seem to be one with the family even in illness as dogs can suffer from cold too. A dog may not be sporting a red nose but an owner accustomed to seeing the active and lively pet will certainly notice the lethargy, the watery eyes and the cough that means the dog has a cold.

People with colds usually allow the ailment to run its course. Commonly, a bowl of hot soup, a cup of steaming tea and a day in bed would make the cold go away. Humans and dogs are said to have many similarities in genetic so would you give the pet a bowl of soup for its cold? Cold weather is not the only reason why dogs can have colds. A pet with a cold can transmit the ailment to other pets. A dog with a weak immune system can be easily affected by cold-causing germs and viruses.

A dog owner would attest to the energy and inquisitiveness of the pet. These animals would enjoy playing in the snow and would not hesitate to follow an interesting scent even under the pouring rain thus it is not surprising if they would have colds.

Colds are normally gone after a few days even without treatment thus people are not really worried about this "ordinary" ailment. Dog owners are not really worried if the pet has a cold as just like in humans, the cold of the pet will be gone after a few days. An owner though can make the ailing pet comfortable. Keep the dog warm.

Don't let the pet go out in the cold or in the rain to prevent the cold from getting bad. The best thing a pet owner can do is to provide supportive therapy. Keep the dog well fed with nutritious foods will boost its immune system. Vitamins and supplements will boost the immune system of the dog for better protection against viral and bacterial attacks. The breathing of dogs with cold is hampered by clogged nose thus a steam filled bathroom will help the to dog to breath easily. Give the dog plenty of water to drink as more fluids will hasten the dog's recovery. Take the pet to the vet's at once if the dog is already showing signs of distress.
