Dog First Aid - Gunshot Wound

By Jerry Welsh

We are a race of dog lovers. In fact most households would have one or more dogs for a pet . Not all people though are dog lovers. Mean and cruel people would not think twice to hurt a dog. Dogs have some bizarre behaviors and one that has filched food from the barbecue or one that has dug holes in the garden will be punished. Dogs that destroy other people's properties can be shot. Hunting and non-hunting dogs commonly get shot during the hunting season. Often times dogs are shot because they are viewed as wild animals by hunters. Many dogs have been injured by the guns of their own masters.

Dogs are tough animals and most would protect their human family but in this instance the pet would depend on the owner. The chance of survival of dogs with gunshot wounds depend on the first aid treatments that the owner can apply. Gunshot wounds are one of the most serious injuries that can happen to dogs because the pet usually suffers from three types of traumas. The bullet will puncture the skin, the shock waves resulting from the entry of the bullet will cause cavitations and the pieces of projectile and shattered bones will damage the tissues and cause severe bleeding.

A gunshot wound is a serious injury thus urgent medical care must be given to the dog but first aid measures will still be important to stabilize the dog's condition. The owner has to check the airway, breathing and circulation.

A dog that has stopped breathing must be helped with rescue breathing. With the dog's mouth close, breath into the dog's nostrils. Give large dogs 5 to 10 breaths per minute and 10 to 20 breaths for smaller dogs. Each breath given should make the chest move slightly. If the dog has no pulse or heartbeat CPR must be started immediately.

Bleeding has to be controlled and this can be done by applying direct pressure to the wound. Use cloth, towel or gauze to control bleeding. Add another cloth or towel over the one already soaked through with blood. Don't remove the blood soaked towel as it will remove the clotting agents and make the wound resume bleeding. A gunshot in the chest would create a hole that has to be sealed with plastic to prevent an abnormality of pressure in the chest. To prevent any exposed organ from drying out, it must be covered with a wet towel .
