Your Dog Needs Help To Be The Best He Can Be

By David Hamilton

Training a dog can be quite a difficult process, if you go into the process blindfolded. Make sure you know what you are doing before you get the dog, otherwise, it will be a disaster. This article will give you the dog training information that you need to make your new addition to the family, well-behaved.

Your home is your domain. Your dog must see the environment they live in as your territory. Stepping around a lying dog or not moving the animal from a place you intend to use gives him the right of way. This should not be allowed. Dominance in the pack means exercising your power in a non-confrontational way but with firm resolve that this is your territory.

Go through the door before your dog, eat your own dinner first and always make sure that you win tug-of-war, by taking away the toy when you're done. This all asserts that you are the pack leader and your dog is subordinate. This will help curb other obedience problems and help in other aspects of training because your dog realizes that he MUST do what you say. It's how he's hard-wired.

If your dog gets anxious every time he sees you getting ready to leave the house, break up your routine a little bit. By changing your leaving routine a bit each day, you will be breaking the anxiety cycle that can trigger your dog to engage in destructive behaviors while you are gone. Leaving for varying amounts of time will also help break up the cycle. Leave for a few minutes one time and a little longer at other times. Eventually, your dog will get used to the idea that you may leave occasionally, and nothing bad will happen to him!

Make sure your yard is free from burrowing wild animals to keep your dog from digging. Some dogs, especially hunting breeds, will dig when looking for prey. Finding humane ways to rid your yard of other animals can help to stop this troublesome behavior. Wild animals can be deterred or relocated for the sake of both your yard and your pet.

Don't punish good behavior. Many dog owners make a big mistake during training for recall by having the dog come for reprimanding. This will only teach your dog that responding to his name is a negative event, and will discourage such behavior in the future. Make sure your punishments never incorporate desirable commands.

Swatting or hitting your dog is not a good training method. If you attempt to train your dog in this manner, all you are teaching them is to be scared of you. Eventually, the dog will stop listening to voice commands, and will only respond to you raising your hand. Getting a dog's loyalty through fear is a mistake on the owner's part.

As stated before, many people worldwide have dogs for pets. Dogs are great pets due to their loyalty, friendliness, and obedience. Dog can sometimes be hard to train despite their qualities, but with the tips from this article, anyone can train their dog without a lot of frustration.
