Dog Training Ideas That Anyone Can Use

By David Hamilton

Having a dog can bring great joy into your life, especially if the dog is properly trained. There are many techniques that you can employ to train your animal into being a fantastic companion. Whether you simply want the dog to stay off of the furniture or learn tricks, good training is something you can start today. Here's how to get started.

When you take your dog out to public places, make sure that you remain in control of him at all times. It is good etiquette to assure that he does not run up to other dogs or people without their permission. Not all people are comfortable around dogs and not all dogs get along.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog, is to be sure to never discipline your dog for bad behavior when he is ill. This will only confuse your dog and might cause him to not respond to discipline in the future. Examples of this would be, if your dog vomits or defecates in a manner that is not typical to his normal behavior.

A good dog training tip is to have your dogs meet at a park if you plan on bringing a new dog into your home. By having the dogs meet at the park, the dogs will be more friendly with each other, and it'll take dominance out of the equation.

When training your dog, it is important to always be consistent. Being consistent applies to the words you use for the commands you are looking for the dog to obey, to the tone you use with the words, and to the rewards you are providing for the dog if they successfully complete the command you are teaching them.

Do not forget to praise your dogs for the good things they do. Humans can be a bit harsh when they are not happy with a dog's behavior, while being far less demonstrative when their dog does good things. Your dog needs you to be very generous with praise so they can easily understand what you want. Be generous with praise to show him how much you value good behavior.

The top mistake any dog owner can make during training is giving up. Giving up too quickly and too easily means that you've given up on your dog's abilities. Your dog needs time, patience, and consistency to grow. Continue working on behaviors in small doses. Your pooch is eager to please, so let him work alongside you.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to ensure that you make it absolutely clear to your dog what it is that your are disciplining it for. This is important to avoid confusion and to teach the dog what is desired and what is undesired behavior. An example of what to avoid is hitting your dog hours past and in a different room from where it shredded your couch.

As you can see, there are many methods of training available to you, to make your dog the best canine he/she can be. Try any or all of these techniques to begin teaching your pet how to behave properly in your home. An educated animal will be a incredible friend for years to come.
