Saving the dog's life with emergency care

Caring for a dog is not unlike caring for a baby. This kind of care is really not surprising given that dogs are treated as the well loved baby of the family. Unfortunately accidents cannot be totally prevented. A fall from heights, ingestion of poisonous substances, choking, dog fights, heatstroke - the list of emergency situations that can endanger the life of the pet is endless. This is why anyone that has decided to get a dog for a pet has to realize that a plan on what must be done in case the dog needs emergency care has to be formulated

24 hour emergency facilities for pets are found in most areas. As a preparation for any emergency situation, a dog owner has have the contact number of these facilities. Because dogs are wonderful companions, they are taken wherever the master goes. However, a dog that gets sick or had an accident while on the road would be a distressing experience for the pet parent. This situation can be avoided by planning ahead. The knowledge that the pet can be given emergency care from any of these animal clinics would lessen the owner's anxiety.

Aside from the knowledge of the location of these centers, a dog owner also has to know how to provide the pet basic medical care in times of emergency. Most dog owners would panic but with a fair amount of working knowledge, the pet owner would know what must be done to help the pet. As accidents and illnesses cannot be totally prevented, a dog owner has to be able to know the signs that all is not well with the pet.

What would be the signs that will tell you of the pet's need for emergency care? Excessive bleeding will be easily noticed. The dog would need emergency care if it is breathing rapidly but has weak pulse, if the gums are pale and the body temperature is abnormal. Seizure and loss of consciousness are signs that the dog needs immediate medical care.

If you have recognized the symptoms the pet is manifesting and you know that emergency care is necessary, can you help the pet? As is to be expected, a vet's expertise will right the situation the dog is in but a vet may not always be available thus the task of stabilizing the pet will fall on the hands of the owner. Severe bleeding has to be stopped. A dog owner has to administer first aid methods to a pet with blocked airways. Emergency care would be very necessary in order to prevent an emergency situation from worsening however, the person administering the first aid must be competent for fear that the pet would sustain more serious injuries.
