You Will Know Your Beagle Well After Grooming Him

By William Donell

Grooming a beagle is more than only brushing him or bath time. Take a holistic approach considering all aspects of his care. To get your beagle to allow you to groom him or her may be a challenge. If you need help getting him to cooperate stick with me here for a few ideas to consider.

We all have seen over weight beagles, it is so easy to overfeed them. They act like you have forgotten to feed them for the last three days and cant go on. They look up at you and wag their tail it is hard to resist. That cute little fellow would probably eat until he explodes, if you let him.

We have to be proactive in controlling our little friends weight. Ideal adult weight is around 20-25 pounds. with their ravenous appetite they can quickly gain 10 pounds. That is the same for them as it would be for us to increase our weight by 40%. Not good for either of us. It is up to you to help the little guy.

Your beagle loves treats but, it can add up in a hurry. I have a trick we do that works well for us. My beagle gets excited when I go to the refrigerator and get him a carrot.

Yes they love them, they will do tricks for them if they are excited enough they think it is the best thing ever. The best part is by giving them carrots it makes us both happy. The carrots seems to clean their teeth and it shouldn't give bad dog gas.

Caring for His Coat

A beagles coat is short but thick and needs to be brushed. The more frequent the brushing the better his coat . it will get rid of the loose hairs and spread his natural oils that keep him looking so good. He is probably not going to like bath time so be thankful he isn't very big. When you towel him off all will be forgiven and he will be happy again.

It is a good idea to give your beagle an inspection from front to back. Look for the little problems before they get to be big ones. Pay close attention to his eyes, mouth and ears.

Cutting Toenails is Important

It takes two of us to clip our beagles toenails. It wasn't pleasant but we always won. It seemed like we had to cut them every two weeks, they do grow fast.

After lots of fights we discovered a trick. We let him sit rather than hold him. We hold a treat (a carrot), above him just out of his reach. He stares at the carrot and we just lift his paws one at a time and trim his nails. He hardly notices. Grooming is work. Take good care of your beagle and he will live a long and healthy life. He is counting on you to take care of him.
