Time and time again, a dog owner has to deal with the injuries sustained by the pet. Dogs are known to be highly energetic animals. It is not uncommon therefore for dogs to get injured. Dogs get wounded fighting with other dogs. Dogs would not mind going into thorny thicket and to run at top speed to follow a prey. Dogs run very fast and a screeching sound can be practically heard when they try to break the momentum. Every dog owner will be faced with the need to deal with the injuries sustained by the pet. Thorns on dog's paws are common injuries of dogs. Dogs can be injured by sharp tree branches. The owner and the dog would be lucky if the pet only sustained minor scrapes and grazes.
Abrasion is a superficial damage to the outer skin. Abrasion is not really common in dogs because the skin is protected by fur . Dogs though are very active animals and it would not be unheard of if the top layer of the skin gets injured from being rubbed against hard and rough surfaces. The upper layer of the dog's skin will be abraded if it is rubbed against rough and hard surfaces. A dog that was hit by a speeding car will be thrown or dragged along the road. Tightly fitted collar that continuously rub against the dog's neck can also cause abrasion. A dog that mutilates itself can also cause superficial damage to the outer layer of the skin. Bored dogs or dogs infested with external parasites have the tendency to incessantly gnaw and lick a body part until abrasions are formed.
Generally, abrasion is not a serious concern. Abraded skin normally does not bleed heavily as the subcutaneous layer of the skin is normally not damaged. There will be no scarring unless the subcutaneous layer of the skin is damaged. Minor abrasions still need to be treated because of the risk of infection. Moreover, even a superficial wound would be painful for the dog.
The pet owner can administer first aid to the abrasion of the pet. Clip the fur away from the affected skin. Fur in the wound would delay the healing and can infect the wound. Clean the abraded skin with a saline solution. A solution made from 2 cups of water and a teaspoon salt can also be used to irrigate the wound. Make sure that all the foreign materials are removed from the wound.
Treat the wound with antibacterial cream three times a day. No bandaging is necessary for small abrasions. However, abrasions on the feet have to be protected with a non-stick dressing to prevent infection from setting in.
