By Bob Long

Today a staggering 50% plus of UK homes own a pet, from cats and dogs to snakes and birds; it looks we like having pets share our homes with us. Folks own pets for many different reasons, mostly for friendship, but also for youngsters, security and to display them! It's not simply a contemporary trend either, all though England's long and established history, pets have played critical parts in family lives. Pussies are renowned mice and rat catchers, which made them essential in combating the bubonic plague, and dogs "man's best friend" have always been connected with royalty.

Now there are around 9 million pet pussies in Great Britain, and over 7 million dogs. Figures suggest that our feline mates are more in demand than canine animals due to our busy working lives becoming increasingly complicated, so independent moggies are far more favourable than more dependent dogs. Shockingly more exotic pets are on the increase, for example snakes, reptiles and exotic fish, regardless of these animals requiring more attention and expert demands.

There's growing recognition that pet ownership can have a genuine impact on our physical and mental well being. Owning pets can benefit people of all ages. Simply taking your dog on a walk or playing with pussies around the house is a form of exercise. Petting and stroking animals has been proved to lower blood pressure and reduce heart rates. Additionally having a pet can help help recovery times and build a child's immune response.

With all the benefits pets can offer their owners and friends, what's stopping you adopting a pet into your house? Well, to be honest pets can cost a surprising fortune. A massive ?73m was spent last year in England, just on pampering dogs!

Sadly rising vets ' bills can be too much for some owners , if their pet gets seriously unwell or injured; the sole option for this 7% of owners is regrettably drastic. Britain's dog owners spend over ?800 million on vet fees every year, with the average cost of treatment weighing in at ?154 a year. To make matters worse, over half of dog keepers in Great Britain suspect some vets inflate their charges by making the recommendation non-essential treatment.

In conclusion a pet is a fantastic addition to any home or family. Do not ever be afraid to be intrepid and go for more unusual pets if you can provide the care needed. Inspire acquaintances and family to play and care for your animals, since it is jointly advantageous for everybody, especially the pet! However just do not forget exactly how much any animal can cost every year, in any case irrespective of whether it wishes to go to the vet. If an animal does need medical aid or treatment, don't feel pressured into buying it from the vets itself, go searching, and particularly look on the net. By following these tips, keeping a pet can be superb, delightful and comparatively cost effective!
