Fed Up With Fido? Teach Him A Lesson With These Tips

By Kirk McGee

A dog is very similar to a television remote that needs to be programmed to work with a TV. The capabilities to work are already there in the remote but a person needs to manipulate it to get it to work with the TV. Dogs already have in them the abilities to be trained but a person needs to follow this article to bring them out.

Walking your dog means leading your dog. Your role in this situation is to lead the pack, therefore your pet should be expected to walk a half step behind. You will instill confidence in your pet when they know you are leading the pack and making the decisions. They will be less likely to attempt running or being distracted while you walk.

Teach your puppy to ring a bell with his paw or nose when he needs to go outside and go to the restroom. Show your dog how to ring the bell before you take it outside. Or have him ring the bell and give it a treat. If you do this every time, you dog will always be able to tell you when it needs to go outside.

A great dog training tip is to let your dog know when they're doing something right. It's very easy to yell at your dog and tell them no when they're misbehaving. It's important to let your dog know when they're doing what you want because that reinforces good behavior

Dog training is an activity that needs to be done frequently. When trying to teach a dog a new behavior one needs to be repetitive. By frequently demonstrating the proper activity or saying the command word it will help the dog learn it. The repetition will facilitate learning of new behaviors for the dog.

For dogs that bark unnecessarily, do not shout at your dog. Shouting to counteract barking can actually be a positive reinforcement for dogs, since they do not understand that you are not reacting at their barking. This feedback loop leads the dog to believe that whatever they're barking at is actually a big deal, so stay calm and distract your dog to deter problem barking.

In order to properly train your dog it is a good habit to always use your pet's name to get his attention. This will reinforce your control over your pet and it will be beneficial in the long run. This can be done when calling your pet for food or even when playing simple games.

To ensure a well-trained four-legged friend from the start, make sure you practice consistency in all you do once you bring your new canine companion home. This means discussing all aspects of the dog's care, needs and training with all members of your household. A dog that is getting yelled at by one family member for urinating in the house while another family member just quietly cleans up the mess serves only to confuse and frustrate the puppy. If all members of the family treat the dog uniformly, whether admonishing it or showering it with praise, the dog will learn more quickly, and all family members will have the ability to successfully command the dog with ease.

Dog training really depends on two factors for success: your willingness and your dog's understanding. Make sure to really take an open approach to training your dog and accept advice when needed. The tips from this article are a great way to start and by no means are they the only way to successfully train your dog.
