How to calm a dog

By Jerry Welsh

Known as man's best friends, dogs have protected humans as well. The quality of humans life was greatly influenced by these animals. Dogs have offered humans comfort and affection. Because dogs are highly attuned to the emotions of humans, they have offered their silent support to sad and troubled master. Dogs are noted to be tough little and not so little guys that are always ready to comfort and defend the master but there are cases when these animals are the ones needing the comfort of their master. Dogs get stressed too and an owner has to do everything to calm the nervous dog.

Different situations in the environment can result to a circumstance where it is necessary to calm the pet. Frantic barking, excessive drooling, pitiful whining are manifestations of a stressed dog. Some dogs would react differently when exposed to a stressful situation. Highly stressed dogs can be hard to control. New situations, unfamiliar faces and places as well as loud noises like the sound of rolling thunder and firecrackers would make a dog nervous.

If the nervous behavior of the pet is not addressed it is highly possible that the pet will develop an irrational fear to these stressful situations. A dog that is always exposed to a stressful situation can be lethargic and can even lose weight. No dog owner would want to see a pet trembling in fear and no owner would want to constantly calm the pet. It is but necessary for pet owners to know how to calm the pet.

To prevent the dog from being stressed it would be best to know what activities or situations trigger a nervous "attack" so that the situation can be avoided. Avoiding stressful situations would not be always possible thus the best thing an owner can do is to find effective ways to calm the pet.

Dogs appreciate being petted. Because dogs enjoy being petted; massaging the pet would be an effective calming method. Take away the nervous tension of the pet by running the hand in circular motion from the head to the rear end. Apart from being naturally curious, dogs are food motivated as well so that Kong toys will remove the dog's attention from whatever is causing the stress and the efforts to get the food from the Kong toy will eventually calm the pet. Dogs are highly energetic animals. Tired dogs are calm dogs thus an owner simply need to provide the dog with sufficient opportunities to exercise. Are you aware that a dog can be calmed simply by yawning? Among people, yawning is catching so that yawning in front of the pet can entice the do to yawn as well, to be calm and feel sleepy.
