What would you do if your dog attacks you

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs form a legendary attachment with their owners. The reaction of a dog when the master is seen would not fail to give credence to the idea that dogs are man's best friends. A dog that is eager to see its human friend would not only exhibit a happily wagging tail but also manifest an aura of excitement and happiness.

It was believed that the alliance between man and dog has existed for thousands of years. These animals that are highly attuned to the feelings of humans would offer affection; comforting presence and protection. However, statistics tell us that almost five million dog attack incidents occur in US and most of the victims were attacked by their own dogs.

Dogs are well love pets that are commonly treated as the "baby" of the family and the putting an aggressive dog to sleep would be a very hard decision for the dog owners. However between the safety of the family and keeping a ferocious dog, the family's well being will win hands down. Although dogs were domesticated, these animals have kept the high prey drive and the ferocity exhibited by dogs in the wild. Some dog owners would have the pet undergo fight trainings to hone the ferociousness so that when this dormant temperament is triggered by a situation, the dog would attack. What will your actions be if your very own gentle pet has suddenly turned aggressive and attack you?

A dog owner being attacked by the pet has to be calm as presence of mind can be the only way to avoid the injuries that can be inflicted by the dog. Being pack animals, dogs would try to dominate pack members perceived to be weak by showing aggression. The dog may have gone berserk but a well trained pet would still hesitate to attack if the command of the master is heard. An uncontrollable pet would still heed the master's sit or stay command thus keeping calm and giving the command would mean getting away from the attacking dog unscathed.

Don't run - running will make the dog more determined to attack you. Act like a tree as dog generally lose interest when the "victim" is not responding but be sure not to stare at the dog as again, this will be interpreted by the animal as a fighting stance. Dog attacks are scary but showing fear will just make the dog more determined to sink its teeth on your body. If the attack cannot be avoided, curl in a fetal position to protect vital parts of your body.
