Why do dogs sleep at your feet?

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are not branded as human's best friends for nothing. We know that these animals have not only provided man with companionship but also with affection and empathy. Dogs are the most loyal pets humans can have as these animals will forever be affectionate and protective of their masters. Dogs are highly valued thus they are provided with all imaginable comforts. Whatever care and affection a dog owner gives to the pet will be doubly reciprocated.

Time and again dogs would prove their affection and loyalty to the human friends. These animals are ready to deal with any discomfort just to be with their masters. Look how your dog would grab any chance to sleep at your feet. We know how dogs love to sleep. If given a chance, dogs will sleep the day away. People that love to sleep would invest on big, soft and comfortable beds. Dogs would not really mind where they sleep. Affection over comfort - your dog would prefer to sleep in your feet even if it means waking up every time you move.

Dogs would constantly want to be with their human friends as apart from being affectionate, these pets form strong bonds with their owners. Dogs are in fact dubbed as Velcro pets as they would want to be as close to the master as possible. Dogs would stand close to the master or even lean on the master's leg and if there is a chance the dog would quietly sidle to sit on the master's lap.

Sleeping at the master's feet cannot be a very comfortable position. A dog though would be ready to have cricks in the neck as long as it can get close to the master. Sleeping at the master' feet is the dog's way of ensuring that the master is protected. This habit can be the dogs way of recognizing the master as the leader of the pack. Being pack oriented, dogs would need to have a well defined hierarchy. A dog that sleeps at the feet of the master is recognizing the leader of the pack.

Sleeping at the feet of the master will not do the dog or the master any harm. Dog owners actually love to have the pet close but what if the pet is a Great Dane, would you still allow the pet to sleep on your feet undisturbed?
