A Hands-Free Leash for Running with a Dog

By Allyson Westcot

Now and then, walking a dog is a challenge. If the pet has not been taught to walk on a lead, or if he's just having an excitable day, a walk with a dog that pulls against you may be frustrating. If you'd like to go for a jog or a run with your pet, multiply the exhaustion factor by at least two. Good leash training is the initial step in having the ability to run with your dog. But top quality gear can also help.

A good leash that's intended to be used hands-free is often a sound investment for active dog owners. This allows you to run naturally while pumping your arms in a natural way. You won't be held back in your exercise by holding onto a leash.

The kind of hands-free dog leash you select is worth some consideration. While a leash that wraps around your waist may be convenient, it might not be really comfy if your dog has a tendency to pull. A hard jerk forward or to the side from a loop around your waist could easily throw off your center of gravity and make you fall.

A leash you hook to your belt or belt loop may cause the same loss of balance, but might also break your belt loop if the pull is hard enough. And dependent on your workout clothing, you may not even have a handy position to snap it.

A leash that goes over one shoulder down the waist and wraps around the body at an angle helps you avoid the pull immediately around the waist. It spreads any impact over a large part of the body, making it less certain you'll be pulled off step. It's snug to wear, there's no need for bulk, and it's totally out of your way for better running.

Be certain to investigate the differing types of hands-free leashes available to determine which feels best for you personally. Then you will be making an investment in something that offers the most comfort and safety for you and your dog.
