Select Havanese Puppies From Reputable Breeders

By Agnes Franco

The Bichon Havanese is regarded as a rare dog breed. Like most small animals, Havanese puppies are irresistible. Other names for the breed are Havana Silk Dog as well as Spanish Silk Poodle. Its coat has the look and texture of raw silk.

During the early 16th century there is mention in ships' logs of dogs being taken to Cuba. The capital, Havana, was once a favored holiday destination of the European aristocracy. The ladies of the French, Spanish and English courts were greatly taken with the little dogs and many were taken back to Europe.

With the Cuban revolution, the dogs almost disappeared. However they are now making a comeback. Although small, the dog is a much-loved watchdog and companion in its native land. It has been nominated the national dog of Cuba.

Havanese puppies grow into affectionate and gentle companions. They are very brave for their size. The coat is soft and light and can reach a length of 6 or 8 inches. The plumed tail curls loosely over the rump.

They are recommended for those with allergies. They do not shed so dead hair and dander needs to be removed by thorough grooming. For easier maintenance, companion dogs can be clipped. They range from 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder and may live for around 14 years.

It is a healthy little dog. Some have luxating patellas and some are susceptible to eye and skin disorders. To cash in on the growing popularity of this breed, there are some unscrupulous breeders selling puppies from dogs that may have genetic problems or suspect temperaments. You should contact a reputable breeder so that you can be assured of a healthy pup.

Havanese puppies will grow to have excellent temperaments. They are friendly and trustworthy with children and other animals. They are easily trained and enjoy obedience trial and other canine activities. Some have been used with success as therapy and assistance dogs.
